"He will not let your foot slip—he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep."
Reflection
Midnight represents our darkest hours—times of crisis, worry, and desperate need. Strange things happen at midnight. It's the hour of pacing floors, facing difficult decisions, and feeling utterly alone. The friend in Jesus' parable knocked at midnight, representing those moments when we need help the most and feel it's least likely to come.
Throughout Scripture, midnight becomes God's time to act. He visited Egypt at midnight to free His people. Jesus walked on water in the middle of the night. Paul and Silas prayed and sang hymns at midnight, and God sent an earthquake that opened prison doors. Even Jesus was arrested around midnight after praying in Gethsemane, showing us that He understands our darkest hours intimately.
The beautiful truth is that God is awake in the midnight hour. When shadows are deepest and fears creep in through darkness, when we think we're alone and God doesn't see our chains, He is fully alert and completely aware. The Creator of the universe never sleeps, never takes a break from caring for His children.
Sometimes we feel like nobody's home when we start knocking on heaven's door. We wonder if our prayers bounce off the ceiling or disappear into cosmic silence. But God isn't asleep, and He isn't ignoring us. He may not come when we call Him, but He's always on time.
One of the best prayers we can pray is simply "Help!" When life overwhelms us and we don't have fancy words or theological insights, God hears our cry. He met the Hebrew slaves in Egypt, He met Paul and Silas in prison, and He will meet you in your midnight hour.
