"Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit." — Ephesians 5:18 NIV

Reflection

The verb in Ephesians 5:18 is continuous — keep being filled. Not a one-time event. Not something that happens at conversion and stays constant without tending. Being filled with the Holy Spirit is a daily, ongoing, actively pursued reality for the follower of Jesus.

Barnabas was described as a man full of the Holy Spirit. That fullness showed. It showed in his generosity, in his warmth toward outsiders, in his ability to see God at work in unexpected places, in his joy when the gospel broke through in Antioch. His fullness was not a private spiritual experience — it was a public, tangible, life-changing presence that affected everyone around him.

The Holy Spirit is infinitely creative. He is not boxed in by our preferences, our traditions, or our comfort zones. He moves where He will. And the person who is genuinely full of the Spirit becomes sensitive to that movement — open to following, willing to change, eager to go wherever God is already at work.

You cannot manufacture the fruit of the Spirit. But you can position yourself to receive it. You can come to God daily — open, surrendered, asking to be filled. And He, who is faithful, will fill you.

Encouragement at its deepest level is a work of the Spirit. You don't just give a word of encouragement — you carry the presence of the One who is the ultimate Encourager.

When was the last time you actively, intentionally asked the Holy Spirit to fill you? What areas of your life most need His presence and power right now?

Action Step

Begin each morning this week with this simple prayer before you get out of bed: "Holy Spirit, fill me today. Lead me. Move through me. Let my life overflow with what only You can give."

Prayer

Holy Spirit, I need You. I cannot be who You are calling me to be in my own strength. Fill me today — to overflowing. Let Your fruit be evident in how I speak, how I listen, how I give, how I love. Make my life a vessel for Your presence. In Jesus' name, Amen.
