“Who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” — Esther 4:14
Reflection
The story of Esther unfolds against a backdrop of danger. The Persian king Xerxes I had unknowingly married a Jewish woman named Esther. A powerful court official named Haman, furious that a Jew named Mordecai refused to bow before him, had convinced the king to issue a decree killing all Jews throughout the empire.
Mordecai came to Esther with the desperate news and urged her to go before the king and plead for her people. Esther was terrified -- approaching the king without being summoned was punishable by death. But Mordecai spoke words that have echoed through the centuries: "Who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?"
God places his people in specific times and places for specific purposes. This is not coincidence. It is calling. The writer of Hebrews affirms that God appoints us to particular seasons and situations. The question is whether we will recognize the moment when it comes -- and whether we will show up.
A praying community stays alert to those moments. Prayer sharpens our awareness that God is always moving, and that we may be positioned, right now, to be part of what he is doing.
