Scripture of the Day
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;” — Proverbs 3:5
Reflection
A man named Ronald Pinkerton was hang gliding at 4,200 feet when a sudden gust of air sent him plummeting toward the ground. Everything he knew as an experienced pilot told him he was going to crash. Then he spotted a red-tailed hawk six feet off his wingtip, fighting the same wind. He watched the hawk bank left and fly straight downwind -- directly against every principle of flying Pinkerton knew. It seemed like suicide.
At 200 feet from the ground, with trees rushing up beneath him, a thought broke through: follow the hawk. It went against everything he knew. But everything he knew wasn't working. So he followed. At 100 feet, a warm surge of air caught the glider and pushed it upward. He was rising.
"Nothing I knew as a pilot could explain what was happening," he wrote. "But it was true: I was rising."
This is the posture of gospel hope. There are moments when every instinct and calculation tells us we are in freefall -- when our circumstances offer no reason for confidence and our own knowledge has run out. It is in those moments that faith asks us to follow what we cannot fully explain, in a direction that doesn't make sense by earthly logic, trusting the One who knows where the wind is.
Question for Personal Reflection
Is there an area of your life right now where God is asking you to follow him against your own instincts?
Action Step
Identify one situation where you have been relying entirely on your own understanding. Surrender it in prayer today.
Prayer
Lord, when we are in freefall, teach us to follow you -- even when the direction doesn't make sense to us. You know where the wind is. Amen.
