"See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!..." — 1 John 3:1 NIV

Reflection

Our world is saturated with false belonging. You can join a club, collect followers, curate a personal brand, and still feel utterly unknown and unloved. The preacher puts it pointedly: "You can be part of Sam's Club, but Sam doesn't care about you." Online communities will accept you until you say the wrong thing. Gyms will welcome you until you miss a payment.

We absorb these transactional models of belonging and unconsciously apply them to God. We assume that if we keep up our spiritual performance — keep giving, keep following the rules, keep showing up — then we'll earn our place in His family. But the moment we slip, we fear the door will be shut.

This is a devastating lie. The gospel is not a membership program. You were not accepted by God because of your righteousness — in fact, Isaiah says our righteous acts are like filthy rags. You were accepted because of Christ's righteousness, received by faith. There are no dues to pay. There is no performance to maintain.

You are a child of God. Not an employee. Not a member on probation. A child. John marvels at this: "See what great love the Father has lavished on us!" This is not a calm, measured love. It is lavish. It is extravagant. It is yours.

In what ways have you been treating your relationship with God as transactional rather than as the unconditional belonging of a child with a Father?

Action Step

Say aloud today, several times: "I am a child of God. My belonging is not earned — it is given." Let that truth settle somewhere deep in you.

Prayer

Father, forgive me for treating Your love like a contract. Help me to receive, really receive, the lavish love You have poured out on me. I am Your child. That is enough. That is everything. Let me live today from that place of security and not from fear. Amen.
