"Jesus asked, 'Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?'" (Luke 17:17-18)

Reflection

The nine had legitimate reasons to rush away. They had families to reunite with after years of isolation. They had priests to see for official confirmation of their healing. They had lives to rebuild. Their blessings became their distraction from the Blesser. In our persistent prayer journey, we can become so focused on what we're asking for that we forget who we're asking.

Jesus expressed surprise and even disappointment that only one returned. This reveals something important: God desires relationship, not just requests. He wants worshipers, not just petitioners. When our prayers are answered, we face a test—will we continue pursuing God, or will we simply pursue the benefits of knowing God?

The nine didn't return perhaps because they were focused on the gift rather than the Giver. They let their blessings obscure their view of Jesus. This is a subtle but serious danger. We can become so consumed with enjoying what God has done that we neglect cultivating our relationship with Him. We wanted healing, provision, breakthrough—and when we get it, we run toward it and away from Him.

Persistent prayer keeps Jesus central, not just our needs. It continues the conversation beyond "please" to include "thank you" and "I worship you." The one leper's persistence was really about pursuing Jesus Himself, not just what Jesus could give.

Have past answered prayers caused you to drift from God rather than draw closer to Him?

Action Step

Before making any new requests in prayer today, spend time simply worshiping God for who He is, separate from what He's done for you.

Prayer

Father, forgive me for the times I've loved Your gifts more than You. Don't let my blessings become barriers between us. I don't just want what You can give—I want You. Keep my eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of my faith. May my persistence in prayer be persistence in pursuing Your presence. Amen.
