Don’t Hit Back

"Do not repay anyone evil for evil... Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." - Romans 12:17, 21

Reflection

You might say, "I haven't hit anybody in a long time." But if someone wrongs you and you start plotting ways to get even, to embarrass them, or cause them to lose out somehow, you might as well be slapping them in the face. The problem with revenge is that it just keeps going and keeps going, and the cost gets higher and higher.

Dale Carnegie witnessed a grizzly bear feeding alone in a clearing at Yellowstone Park. No other creature dared approach—until a skunk walked through the meadow and took its place beside the bear. The grizzly didn't object, and Carnegie understood why: it would cost the bear too much to get even.

You may be able to get even with your enemies, but it doesn't pay. Forgiveness costs less than revenge. Jesus taught, "Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also." This isn't weakness—it's strength. It's refusing to let evil dictate your response.

Don't avenge yourself; leave vengeance to God. Don't repay evil with evil. Instead, overcome evil with good. Feed your enemy if he's hungry. Give him drink if he's thirsty. By doing this, you act like Jesus and reveal yourself as a true child of God.

Reflection Question

Who do you need to stop trying to "get even" with? What would it cost you to truly forgive them?

Action Step

Release one grudge today. Consciously choose to forgive someone who has wronged you and commit not to seek revenge in any form.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I confess my desire for revenge and my struggle to forgive. Help me to release those who have wronged me into Your hands. Give me strength to overcome evil with good and to trust You with justice. Amen.
