Matthew 17:7 — "But Jesus came and touched them. 'Get up,' he said. 'Don't be afraid.'"
Reflection
The disciples had watched Jesus heal the sick, calm storms, and feed thousands. But something about the transfiguration undid them completely. When they heard the voice of God the Father from the cloud, they fell face down on the ground in sheer terror.
It's significant what happened next. Jesus didn't thunder at them to pull themselves together. He didn't lecture them on their lack of faith. He walked over, reached down, and touched them.
One word in the original language carries the idea of a gentle, deliberate contact — the kind of touch that says I see you and you're safe. And then the words: "Get up. Don't be afraid."
We live in a time of considerable anxiety. Fear about health, relationships, finances, the future. And Jesus' response to frightened people hasn't changed. He doesn't stand at a distance issuing commands. He comes close. He touches. He speaks.
The disciples didn't rise because of a thunderclap — they rose because Jesus reached down to them. Whatever you are afraid of today, the same Jesus who touched those terrified men on the mountain is reaching toward you.
Action Step
Sit quietly for five minutes today. Imagine Jesus placing his hand on your shoulder and saying, "Don't be afraid." Let that be your prayer posture — receiving rather than asking.
Prayer
Jesus, I am often afraid. Thank you that you come close rather than staying distant. Touch me today and remind me I am not alone. Amen.
