Scripture of the Day
“Why, my soul, are you downcast? Put your hope in God.” — Psalm 42:5
Reflection
In the light of the gospel, despair is ultimately a sin. Not a sin to be condemned harshly -- most of us have been there -- but a sin in the sense that it is a failure of faith. It says that what God has promised is not reliable. It says the resurrection does not change things. It says the love poured into our hearts through the Spirit is not enough.
Despair, in other words, is a lie. A deeply felt lie. A sometimes overwhelming lie. But a lie nonetheless.
The psalmist knew this. "Why are you downcast, O my soul?" he asked -- not dismissively, but with genuine pastoral honesty. He was not pretending the downcast feeling wasn't real. He was challenging it. Why are you there? Is there actually cause for it, given who God is and what he has done?
The answer is to preach the truth to your own soul. To remind yourself -- out loud, if necessary -- of what God has said and what God has done. To put your hope in God, not because the circumstances have changed, but because the gospel has already changed the most important thing.
Question for Personal Reflection
When you feel despair, what truths do you return to? Are there specific promises you need to preach to yourself more consistently?
Action Step
Write out Psalm 42:5 and put it somewhere you will see it today. Return to it whenever your soul begins to sink.
Prayer
Lord, when despair speaks, help us speak back -- with the truth of the gospel, the fact of the resurrection, and the promise of your love. Amen.
