"There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus." — Galatians 3:28 (NIV)
Reflection
Jesus did not take the comfortable road. He deliberately went off the map to have a conversation with a Samaritan woman at a well—someone whom every social, religious, and cultural convention of the day would have told him to avoid.
He crossed barriers of race, religion, gender, and sin without hesitation, because what he saw most clearly was not her labels but her suffering.
Consider the barriers that still exist in your own life and neighborhood. In our cities, race still separates most close friendships. Differences in belief keep neighbors at arm's length. Social stigma keeps people isolated.
Jesus modeled a radically different way: he leaned in. With the woman at the well, He asked for a drink from a common cup. He started a conversation. The barriers we face today are real, but they are not greater than the love Christ modeled at that well.
Action Step
Identify one barrier in your own life—a person of a different background, belief, or experience whom you have kept at a comfortable distance. This week, take one small step toward that person. It might be as simple as learning their name, introducing yourself, or asking a genuine question about their life.
Prayer
Jesus, you crossed every barrier to reach the woman at the well—and you crossed every barrier to reach me. Give me your eyes to see past labels, past differences, past the walls I have built or inherited. Make me willing to go off the map, to sit at wells I would normally avoid, and to start conversations I would normally skip. Amen.
