Scripture of the Day
“How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!” — Psalm 119:103
Reflection
It would have been understandable if the people of Nehemiah's day had thrown a party. They had rebuilt an entire city wall in 52 days while facing threats, mockery, and sabotage. But instead of celebrating the structure, they gathered around the Scripture. This tells us something essential about what a community of faith is for.
Buildings matter. Programs matter. Budgets and facilities and staff all serve a purpose. But they are means, not ends. The wall was built so that the community could again be formed by the Word of God. The structure created the conditions; the Scripture did the work.
We can fall into the same trap in our own spiritual lives -- measuring growth by our activity rather than our intimacy with God. We build up a schedule of Christian service and mistake the busyness for nourishment. But God is not primarily after your calendar. He is after your heart. And hearts are shaped by his Word.
The psalmist described Scripture as sweeter than honey. That kind of delight doesn't come from obligation -- it comes from relationship.
