Matthew 17:8 — "When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus."
Reflection
After the terror subsided and Jesus had touched them, the disciples lifted their eyes and found that Moses and Elijah were gone. The cloud had lifted. The blazing light had faded. And standing there in the ordinary light of a mountain morning was Jesus — just Jesus.
That image is one of the most quietly powerful in all of Scripture. Through every trial, through every season of doubt, through every storm of life — to just see Jesus.
There are so many voices competing for our attention and trust. News cycles, cultural authorities, influential voices online, the weight of other people's opinions. Moses represented the entire weight of religious law and tradition. Elijah represented prophetic authority. Both were gone. Just Jesus remained.
The Christian life isn't ultimately about being more disciplined, or finding the right system, or following the best advice. It's about keeping your eyes on a person. When life gets complicated and frightening and overwhelming, the invitation is always the same: look up. And when you do, may what you find be Jesus — sufficient, present, and enough.
Action Step
What "voice" is currently competing most loudly with Jesus for your trust or attention? Name it honestly. Then spend time today reading one of Jesus' own words in the Gospels and letting his voice be the loudest one.
Prayer
Lord, in the noise and confusion of my life, help me look up and see only you. Be my fixed point. Be enough. Amen.
