Reflection

His real name was Joseph. But nobody called him that. The apostles gave him a nickname — Barnabas — and it stuck because it was simply, undeniably true. He was the son of encouragement. Wherever he went, whoever he met, something life-giving came with him.

That nickname wasn't given in a ceremony. It wasn't a title he applied for. It was a description that emerged organically from the way he lived. The apostles looked at Joseph of Cyprus and said, essentially, "This man is encouragement."

What nickname would the people in your life give you? If the people who know you best — your family, your coworkers, your neighbors, your church community — had to describe you in one phrase, what would it be? Not the phrase you hope for, but the one that actually fits based on how you consistently show up?

That question is worth sitting with. Not for the purpose of shame, but for the purpose of honest reflection. Because we are all building a reputation, whether we intend to or not. Every interaction either deposits something into the people around us or withdraws something from them.

The beautiful news is that reputation is not fixed. By the power of the Holy Spirit, anyone can become someone whose very presence brings life.

If the people closest to you gave you a nickname based on how you make them feel, what would it be? Is that the name you want?

Ask a trusted friend or family member one honest question today: "How do I make you feel when we spend time together?" Listen without defending yourself.

Prayer

Lord, I want to be known for bringing life, not taking it. I want my presence to be an encouragement, not a burden. Shape my character by Your Spirit so that the name people associate with me reflects something of You. Make me someone whose very presence carries hope. In Jesus' name, Amen.
