Reflection

In 1952, missionary Helen Roseveare arrived in the Belgian Congo with dreams of bringing healing. Five years later, during a brutal civil war, her mission station was attacked. She endured unspeakable violence and watched everything she'd built destroyed. That night, broken and afraid, she cried out to God: "Where were you when I needed you most?"

She heard no audible answer. But morning brought something unexpected—a small Congolese girl appeared with a mango, her only food. "Jesus told me you were hungry," the child said simply.

In that moment, Helen understood. God hadn't been absent. He'd been there all along, working through small hands to keep His promise that He would never leave her nor forsake her. That bruised mango became a sacrament, proof that God provides in the darkest hours.

Helen could have left defeated. Instead, she returned and served for twenty more years, training hundreds of African doctors and nurses. She discovered what many of us must learn: God's faithfulness often comes wrapped in unexpected packages. Not the dramatic rescue we imagined, but a child with a mango. Not an angel with a sword, but a baby in a manger.

This Christmas, your provision might look small and unexpected too. A friend's text at just the right moment. A stranger's kindness. A song that speaks directly to your situation. Don't dismiss these small miracles. They're God keeping His promises.

Father, forgive me for missing Your small miracles while waiting for dramatic rescues. Open my eyes to see Your provision, even when it comes through unexpected hands. Help me trust that You are working, even in the darkness. Amen.
