Scripture of the Day
“Hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit.” — Romans 5:5
Reflection
We have all had hopes that disappointed us. We hoped for a relationship that fell apart. We hoped for a job that didn't come. We hoped for a healing that didn't happen the way we prayed. Disappointment is one of the most universal human experiences, and enough of it can make us afraid to hope at all.
Paul anticipates this. He does not promise that every specific hope we carry will be fulfilled exactly as we picture it. But he makes a larger claim: the hope of the gospel -- the hope rooted in justification, in God's love, in the Spirit poured out in our hearts -- this hope will not ultimately shame us. It will not leave us standing empty-handed. It will not overpromise and underdeliver.
The reason is not a formula or an argument. It is a person. God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit. The guarantee of the hope is not our faith -- our faith is imperfect and inconsistent. The guarantee is the love of God, which is neither imperfect nor inconsistent, poured out generously and personally into the heart of every believer.
That love is the ground beneath the hope. And it will hold.
Question for Personal Reflection
Have past disappointments made you reluctant to hope? How does the love of God speak to that reluctance?
Action Step
Identify one area of your life where you have stopped hoping. Bring it before God today and ask him to restore expectant faith.
Prayer
Lord, your love is the guarantee our hearts need. Pour it into us again today, and restore the hope that disappointment has worn thin. Amen.
