Reflection

The story of the missionary David Livingstone is often told as the story of one extraordinary man. But it is really the story of a community.

There was the missionary from Africa who came home to his sending church, the one where Livingstone grew up as a young boy. His challenge to Livingstone to train as a doctor to become a medical missionary would change the trajectory of Livingstone's life. There were the people who prayed in that church for a generation, those who weren't called to go, but called to stay and pray and support.

Livingstone did not sustain the mission alone. He was held up by a community -- prayed for, sent, covered, and remembered. When he died on his knees in Africa, thousands of miles from home, he was not alone. He had been accompanied every step of the way by people who would never see Africa themselves.

This is what the church is for. Not just to gather and be formed, but to send and sustain. The early church in Acts gathered around teaching, fellowship, and prayer -- and from that gathered strength, they went out. The gathering was not the end. It was the fuel.

A community that sustains mission is a community that prays for those it has sent, gives to enable those it will send, and stays committed to the long work even when results are invisible. It keeps the record. It writes the names. And it believes, even in the cold and the dark, that faithful presence is never wasted.

Who has your church sent -- into ministry, into mission, into service? Are you actively praying for and supporting those people? Who has sent and supported you?

Action Step

Write a note or send a message today to someone who has supported your faith journey -- a mentor, a teacher, a community that prayed for you. Tell them specifically what their faithfulness meant to you.

Prayer

Lord, thank you for the community that has held me up. Thank you for those who prayed when I didn't know I needed prayer, who gave when I didn't know they were giving, who believed in what you were doing in me when I could not see it. Make me that kind of person for someone else. Let me be a sustaining presence in the mission you are building. Amen.
